The History of Turning
Turning a work piece to form it dates back to 1300 BC when ancient Egyptians developed the two-person lathe, where one person used a rope to spin the work piece while another held a forming tool to it, shaping it symmetrically.
Over the centuries, multiple cultures have contributed to the turning lathe's development. But it wasn't until the 1970s that computerized numerical control (CNC) provided the lathe its digital mastery. And since, their advances in tool and work holding achieve both symmetrical and non-symmetrical geometries to the tenth of an inch!
Turning: Turns, very much the inverse of drills, spin the block of material against the drill bit (instead of spinning the drill bit and putting it into contact with the material). Turning, A typical machining process in which a cutting tool describes a helix shaped tool path by moving linearly, while the work-piece rotates on its axis.
CNC turning is a machining method whereby a pointed cutting tool is fed parallel onto the surface of material that is being rotated. Often a process performed in a machine shop, the rotation is done with a lathe, a machining tool that dates back to ancient Egypt. This particular type of machine is used to secure and spin the part that is being machined.
A CNC turning machine is highly sophisticated and operated automatically. To produce precision parts and components, a software program using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) provides directions to the machine. Although an operator oversees production, this manufacturing method is typically hands-off. This type of CNC machine is a cutting tool that produces metal, wood, and plastic precision parts and components.
The turning process always include automatic lathing,CNC turning/CNC lathing and turning machining. The turning process is suitable for mass production of high precision small components, such as components for cell phone, medical devices, optical equipment, automobile, lighting industry, office equipment, etc.
Introduction to the Turning Process
As for the actual turning process, bars hold the material firmly in place while a tool associated with the machine rotates, removing material to achieve the desired size and shape of the finished product. Depending on the bar feeder, which can vary in length, the amount of handling required differs from job to job. Mounted on a turret controlled by a computer is the actual cutting tool. However, the design of the turret is such that it can hold additional tools if you need a more complex part of component manufactured. For example, it is common for this machine to perform both turning and milling at the same time.
