Welding can be as basic as a farmer, welding repairs on tractors, or precision welding of nuclear grade pipe connectors like deep sea divers. Obviously, not all welding is the same. Metal fabrication shops are largely segmented according to the quality and type of welding they promise. As with any expertise, welding has a large number of certifications, training, processes, types and professions. Written certification is usually obtained through a welding test (actually testing the welding technique of a manual welder) and is a common way for many stores to demonstrate to customers that they are able to reach a specified level of quality.
